How has June treated you?
Having reflected on the month of June personally, I have decided that I want to do an experiment, and spend less time on Facebook & Instagram. I am spending too much time on social media, and it is hindering my productivity and success.
While social media is a great way to market our online work, it also can be a huge distraction and can zap out a lot of our creative power if we just let it consume us, and not inspire us. That is what happened to me. I felt overwhelmed by seeing what others were doing, that I started to compare myself. Instead, I should have been investing more time in focusing on my own growth and development, and serving others. Which is what I am doing this month – by consciously spending less time on social media for July. I made this decision through reflective journaling.
Reflective journaling is a space for you to record and reflect on your observations and situations, to explore and analyse ways of thinking. Self-reflection gives you time to look inwards.
Self-reflection can be a fun exercise. It allows you to create mini challenges for yourself. (think of your live like a video game - what skills do you need to acquire / what changes do you need to make to make it to the next level?). Self-reflection enables you to treat life like an experiment. Play about and mix things up a bit. Find out what changes are successful, and what ones aren't.
Sometimes when our live does not go as we hope, think of that as a failure. However, sucessful people take risks and are not afraid of failing several times. As failure teaches us on how to change and improve. If last month wasn't as productive as you hoped, learn from it. As yourself what you can do differently to improve this month.
There are three main benefits of self-reflection:
1. Strengthen Emotional Intelligence.
Taking time to look inwards helps to build self-awareness and self-regulation. Self- awareness enables you to understand your emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives, values and goals, and recognise their impact on others. Self-regulation involves the ability to control or redirect your disruptive emotions and impulses and adapt to changing circumstances. Working on these skills will improve your personal and professional life.
2. Act with integrity
Becoming clear on your core values will help to strengthen your integrity and lead to better decisions. Our integrity is often tested in stressful times. Taking time to review your key decisions and actions in the past and evaluating them against your core values is critical to acting with integrity.
3. Be more confident
Confidence is key for balancing a busy life. It plays a pivotal role in effective communications, decision-making and influence building. The more you reflect on your strengths and how you can build upon them, the more confident you will be in the future. We become more confident in where our strengths lie and how to close the gaps in our areas of weakness.
Since it is the end of June & the start of a new month, it is a great chance to reflect on the month of June (on what went well & what didn’t, in order to successfully make progress in this new month of July).
