One of my favourite exercises to do with coaching clients is superhero work.
Who is your favourite superhero?
What traits do they have that you admire? Their courage, strength, bravery?
One significant physical trait of a superhero is their posture and the way they carry themselves.
At a Tony Robbins seminar last year, I learnt that your physiology (the way you stand and carry yourself), directly affects your state, which effects your emotions.
Think about your body language for a sec. Do you stand closed up (arms folded, hunched over)? Or do you have an open, superhero like body language?
The way you stand directly affects the way you feel.
THERE IS A SCIENTIFIC STUDY THAT SHOWS IF YOU STAND IN SUPERHERO POSE FOR JUST FIVE MINUTES BEFORE A BIG INTERVIEW, HARD TASK OR PRESENTATION, YOU WILL FEEL MORE CONFIDENT AND PERFORM BETTER. (Its like biohacking yourself for success - hehe)
Loads of studies have proved that this open posture helps us feel more powerful. It also reduces stress hormones (cortisol) and helps us feel more relaxed and in control.
How to do the superhero pose
The physical pose is the legs spread apart, arms on hips and elbows bent. This is an open posture.
Try this the next time you feel yourself get stressed and notice yourself feel more calm and Empowered instantly.
